Gwen Robbins Schug - awesome scholar, awesome book

As has been hinted previously on the BANDIT blog, Dr. Gwen Robbins Schug's new book has just been released! It is entitled, "Bioarchaeology and Climate Change: a view from South Asian prehistory". A short synopsis of the book is available on her website.

The book is published by University Press of Florida as part of Clark Larsen's book series "Bioarchaeological Interpretations of the Human Past: Local, Regional, and Global Perspectives". It will also be available through Oxford University Press Online later this year. If one's academic institution subscribes, OUPO carries fully searchable academic books, which can be downloaded by chapter or in their entirety without cost to the patron.

Congratulations to Gwen on the publication of her book!

Starvation? Probably. Cannibalism? Eh, not so much.

As mentioned in an earlier post, Gwen Robbins Schug of Appalachian State led a study of hearth remains at a Donner Party camp and found no evidence of cannibalism, although the rendering of fat from animal bone fragments is consistent with starvation. The paper - Men, women, and children are starving: the archaeology of the Donner Family Camp - has been published in the July issue of American Antiquity

BANDITs dominate this month's issue of AJPA!

Wow, three articles in the latest issue of AJPA are by BANDIT members. You know what that is? That is awesome! (As is this.)

We already sent out the early view alerts for these articles by Libby Cowgill (Asst. Professor, University of Missouri)& Herman Pontzer (Washington University) et al., Dan Eisenberg (PhD student, Northwestern University) et al., and Gwen Robbins (Asst. Professor, Appalachian State University)et al., but it's so cool to see all three in a single issue. The whippersnappers are kicking ass!

Cowgill et al.: Waddling and toddling: The biomechanic effects of an immature gait

Eisenberg et al.: Worldwide allele frequencies of the human apolipoprotein E gene: Climate, local adaptations, and evolutionary history

Robbins et al.: Estimating body mass in subadult human skeletons

New Wiley title joins the BANDIT bandwagon!

I'm very happy to announce that a new title under the Wiley-Blackwell umbrella has teamed up with BANDIT to provide free access to selected articles. The International Journal of Osteoarchaeology has a new article by Gwen Robbins in early view. We look forward to highlighting many more IJO articles by the BANDIT community in the future!

Gwen Robbins is awesome!

Dr. Gwen Robbins, assistant professor at Appalachian State University, has been busy lately. She currently has two articles in early view:

Don't Throw Out the Baby With the Bathwater: Estimating Fertility from Subadult Skeletons, in International Journal of Osteoarchaeology

Estimating body mass in subadult human skeletons, co-authored with Paul Sciulli and Samantha Blatt, in American Journal of Physical Anthropology

In addition, Gwen was recently awarded a Fulbright to return to India for a bioarchaeological project on the skeletons from the Indus civilization.

Congratulations to Gwen on some great work! I know there's more to come....in (spoiler alert!) book form. Stay tuned.
